Contentment is the Key

We’ve all heard the expression “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” well this is one of the key principles for green shopping.  There are a number of items for sale under the titles of “used” or “previously owned” which work just as good as a brand new product would work.  To buy a used washer and dryer set, or clothes, or tool means that the resources to build each item brand new did not have to be used.  Let’s be honest, companies will continue to produce new products, but this economy is run by supply and demand, and if demand goes down by purchasing and re-using old items, supply will follow.
However, with buying used items comes the responsibility to make smart purchases.  If you buy a used washer or dryer that suck electricity like it’s candy, in the long run it’d probably be a better decision to buy a new product that is more energy efficient.

The words of an old rhyme, “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without” provide us with some excellent words of wisdom.  Before you buy something new, consider the following: does the old one still work, can I get one used, do I have the money to buy one, and do I really need it?  Many of the financial woes of this country can be solved by living within our means.
